Macht was born in the Bronx, New York City, parents actors Stephen Robert Macht and Suzanne Victoria Pulier, worked as museum curators and archivists. His father is of Ashkenazi Jewish descent and his mother has Dutch and French ancestry. Macht was raised in California. He has two sisters: Jessie (an actress) and Julie (a casting director).
Macht began acting at the age of eight when he appeared in a commercial for Mr. Bubble bath products; however, it was not until he played the role of Young Hercules in Hercules: The Legendary Journeys that he found widespread recognition.
