Newcastle United have completed the signing of Southampton defender Tino Livramento for an initial fee of PS32 Million that could rise up to PS40 Million through performance-related add-ons. He showed great promise during his 2021/22 season at St Mary’s before an ACL injury curtailed what could have been an outstanding year.

Southampton are reported to have agreed a deal worth PS32 million with performance-related add-ons that will take its total worth to PS38 million, with additional performance-related add-ons. They believe the amount represents their full-back’s true market value – something which has come as part of a more aggressive player valuation policy following last season’s relegation from the Premier League.

Injury history

Livramento made waves upon joining Southampton from Chelsea’s academy last season but, due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury sustained during training, his impressive start was cut short prematurely and over one year was lost with his rehabilitation process.

Livramento has since made a successful return to football after suffering an injury setback, yet his rehabilitation remains a significant step backward. Now looking forward to an exciting start with Newcastle United.

Livramento joined Eddie Howe as his third summer signing after Sandro Tonali and Harvey Barnes. On Friday at St James’ Park he watched Newcastle finish their pre-season preparations with a win against Villarreal 1-0 to complete their pre-season preparations with success. Livramento made headlines earlier this summer when Chelsea academy player Livrardu Antoniou made headlines as the Magpies secured victory 1-0 over Villarreal.

Goals

Livramento scored once during two seasons with Southampton before suffering a serious knee injury that sidelined him for most of last season as they were relegated. Since his return, however, he will compete against Kieran Trippier for playing time at right-back for Newcastle United.

He has already featured in Newcastle United’s pre-season schedule and their 4-0 win against Villarreal on Sunday. Alongside Harvey Barnes and Sandro Tonali, he will form part of Eddie Howe’s revamped defence.

Howe has likened Livramento, who joins from Manchester City full back Aymeric Laporte, as similar qualities seen at Manchester City. Howe has been impressed with Livramento’s attitude and willingness to learn; furthermore he feels he will fit seamlessly with their style of play – Livramento being especially well regarded for attacking from the back which suits Howe’s approach perfectly; Livramento looks set for an exciting future at Newcastle United as one of their key players.

Performance

Livramento made an immediate impact upon returning to action, replacing Kyle Walker-Peters in Southampton’s starting eleven and creating three chances and sending two crosses in their FA Cup victory over Chelsea.

Though Trippier may not feature against Fulham on Saturday, he should feature in Ralph Hasenhuttl’s final two games of the season due to an injury-free recovery and could vie with Romain Perraud for selection as his replacement next term.
